ABOUT

The largest natural history collection outside of the national collections and the inspiration to many of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ characters.

Founded in 1860 as the centre for scientific study at the University of Oxford, the Museum of Natural History now holds the University’s internationally significant collections of geological and zoological specimens. The cathedral like building with soaring stained glass ceilings was designed by architects Thomas Newenham Deane and Benjamin Woodward, inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and funded largely through the sale of Bibles. This stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture, is home to the Museum’s growing collections which underpin a broad programme of natural environment research, teaching and public engagement.

The Museum also houses extraordinary specimens such as the most complete soft tissue remains of the Dodo, said to have inspired Lewis Carroll, in creating the character in Alice in Wonderland, the world’s first scientifically-described dinosaur, Megalosaurus bucklandii; and nesting swifts in the tower.
