ABOUT
A stunning Grade I listed theatre with mesmerising ceiling murals and 360 degree views of Oxford from the cupola
The first major project designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the Sheldonian Theatre was built from 1663 onwards to provide an appropriately grand setting for University of Oxford degree ceremonies. This highly impressive building, often described as one of the architectural jewels of Oxford is modelled on Rome’s classical Theatre of Marcellus, with a semi-circular structure at the rear and rectangular at the front. Entering the Sheldonian, visitors’s eyes will be instantly drawn to the mesmerising 17th century murals covering the long ceiling depicting the triumph of truth over ignorance, by Robert Streeter, a painter to the Royal Household of Charles II.
This stunning Grade I listed theatre seats up to 750 guests and its unique shape provides a welcoming and intimate feel. On days when the Sheldonian is not being used for formal ceremonies and private events, visitors have the opportunity to join guided tours to learn about 900 years of the University’s history and can climb to the Theatre’s cupola for 360-degree views of the surrounding buildings and experience the best indoor panoramic view of Oxford.

The theatre also hosts frequent public concerts with a busy schedule of events throughout the year. The shape of the building contributes to a spellbinding experience when hosting a full orchestra resulting in high demand at many of the events.
