ABOUT

A diagnosis of cancer or a blood disorder changes everything: how we feel about ourselves, our health, our relationships, our livelihood and means of supporting our families, our future.

The Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital is here to help; to give hope, to treat medically with dignity and compassion and, if humanly possible, to cure patients. Despite cancer being an illness which is handed out like a lottery, the staff at Cancer Care Haematology Unit understand just how patients feel and have dedicated their professional lives to caring, curing and controlling the diseases.

The Cancer Care and Haematology fund was founded in 1990 to raise money for the building of the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Since the opening of the building it has continued to fundraise to support the work of the Unit, maintain it at the forefront of good care and innovation and to plan for growth in the future.

Fundraising for Cancer Care Haematology Unit

Although part of Stoke Mandeville Hospital, the unit is a unique stand-alone facility designed and purpose-built to provide a wide range of outpatient and day-case treatments for patients with cancer, including blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.  Patients with non malignant blood problems such as clotting and bleeding disorders, various forms of anaemia, immune problems and haemoglobinopathies, are also investigated and cared for in the CCHU.

Fundraising is a vital support for the future of the unit. There are many ways in which supporters have raised funds over the years, from small individual ideas to major events involving hundreds of people.   Fundraising pays for nurses in the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit, as well as supporting the staff by financing training opportunities. It also helps to maintain the equipment and structure of the CCHU, ensuring it remains at the forefront of cancer and haematological care. Other fundraising initiatives include wigs for people undergoing chemotherapy, who sadly lose their hair.
