The Musical Youth Company of Oxford presents ‘Me and My Girl’ at the Oxford Playhouse from Wednesday, 3rd April to Saturday, 6th 2024. This musical masterpiece, with a book by L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber and music by Noel Gay, serves up a hearty dose of comedic chaos and heart-warming moments. The plot revolves around the Hareford family’s quest to find the rightful heir to their title, leading them to Bill, a fun-loving cockney from Lambeth. Bill’s journey to become a proper aristocrat, all while trying to stay connected to his beloved Sally, promises side-splitting hilarity and unforgettable musical numbers like ‘Me and My Girl,’ ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On,’ ‘Lambeth Walk,’ and ‘Leaning On A Lamp Post.’

Originally making waves in London in 1937, ‘Me and My Girl’ experienced a triumphant revival in the 1980s, thanks to a revised book by the brilliant Stephen Fry, earning it three Tony Awards. Now, Musical Youth Company of Oxford brings their unique and fresh interpretation of this timeless classic to the Playhouse stage. Journey through the vibrant landscapes of India, as Choogh Choogh arrives at the Chipping Norton Theatre. This unique performance work is a celebration of the sheer joy of traveling by train through this diverse and colourful country. Choogh Choogh seamlessly blends the grace of classical Indian dance with contemporary movement, theatre, and the art of playful storytelling to create an immersive experience like no other.

As the performance unfolds, the audience becomes part of the adventure with their very own ‘Choogh Choogh’ ticket. Through a delightful interplay of three scarves, three talented artists transport spectators from one scene to the next, mirroring the changing landscapes and vibrant culture outside the train window. The soundscape envelops the senses, filled with the rhythmic sounds of the train, the calls of hawkers, the music of festivals, and the ambient sounds of India’s rivers, jungles, and bustling cities.

Special songs, like ‘Chai Chai,’ ‘Coffee Coffee,’ and ‘Kites Kites Everywhere,’ written for children, add to the enchantment. The artists’ interactions with the audience ignite their imagination as scarves become steam, train tracks, turbans, train windows, and even camels and elephants. In this journey, passengers experience not only the world inside the train but also the vibrant world that exists outside it. As tickets are checked, imaginary food is shared, and the train ‘chooghs chooghs on,’ Choogh Choogh invites everyone to explore the limitless boundaries of what we can see and imagine together.
